The Business Banking Practitioner qualification: what it is, who it is for, and why banks are paying attention

4 min readCPS

Inside the NQF Level 6 qualification CPS built to turn business bankers into the advisors South Africa’s SME economy is asking for.

Ask any business banker what their job is, and most will talk about products, term loans, overdrafts, and trade finance. That was always the language of the industry, and for a long time it was enough. It is not enough anymore. South Africa’s SMEs are dealing with tighter margins and unpredictable supply chains, and one bank’s offering looks a lot like the next one’s. When a business owner sits down with a relationship manager, they want someone who understands the business, not just the account attached to it. That gap is what the Business Banking Practitioner qualification was built to close.

What it is

The Business Banking Practitioner, or BBP, is a QCTO-accredited occupational qualification at NQF Level 6, registered with SAQA under ID 120117, carrying 202 credits, and runs over 12 months. Cornerstone Performance Solutions built it specifically for people working inside South Africa’s business and commercial banking environment.

Like every QCTO qualification, it combines a knowledge component, a practical component, and a structured workplace component, all of which must be completed. It closes with an External Integrated Summative Assessment administered by INSETA, independent of CPS, which is a big part of why it carries weight with employers and regulators.

Who it is for

The BBP suits relationship managers, business bankers, and portfolio managers already working with SME clients who need to move from managing accounts to managing relationships that grow. Banks enrol full cohorts as part of structured talent development, with CPS managing the process end to end. Individuals can also apply directly.

The problem it solves

According to a KPMG Global Banking Survey, 65 percent of SME banking clients switch providers because of a lack of sector-specific expertise, not pricing. Most relationship managers know their products well. What they often lack is the business insight to understand how a manufacturer’s cash flow moves through a production cycle, or why a retailer expanding to a third store needs financing phased around store openings rather than handed over as a lump sum. That insight has to be taught in a way that connects to the work a banker is already doing.

Inside the curriculum

The programme runs across seven modules and roughly 540 hours, with 88 hours of virtual classroom contact and eleven formative assessments building toward the EISA. It opens with a two-day entrepreneurial simulation, then moves through establishing an SME portfolio, contextualising business banking, and a twelve-week module on financing a business.

Later modules cover sustaining professional relationships and managing a medium enterprise portfolio, before a final EISA preparation module with three mock exams. Throughout, it builds three capabilities: portfolio management excellence, financial solutions expertise, and strategic business advisory, the ability to connect industry shifts to a client’s cash flow months ahead.

How it is delivered

The BBP runs through CPSLearn, the platform CPS has refined over 25 years in South African banking, with flexible virtual delivery built around a banker’s existing workload. Learners also get Khanyisa, CPS’s AI coaching tool, offering guidance in the moment a real client situation comes up, alongside structured mentorship from senior bankers. Nobody is pulled out of their job. Every module ties back to something happening in their portfolio that week.

Funding and getting started

The BBP is BANKSETA eligible, which helps make cohort rollout more affordable for banks. Organisations can enrol a full cohort, with CPS managing everything from project planning to post-programme evaluation. Individuals can apply directly. Either way, it starts with a conversation about intakes and requirements.

Why this comes from CPS

CPS has spent 25 years building qualifications for South Africa’s financial services sector, with a long-standing specialism in banking. More than 30,000 banking professionals have advanced their careers through CPS development, and the organisation holds three BANKSETA Awards.

Completion rates sit above 85 percent, against an industry average closer to 67 percent, the result of structured learning journeys and a methodology called RAMPed, built around how people actually apply new thinking under pressure. CPS is also a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor, with 57 percent Black ownership and 32 percent Black women ownership.

The advisors the market is asking for

Fintechs keep chipping away at the transactional layer of banking, and digital platforms commoditise the basics a little more every year. What cannot be commoditised as easily is a banker who genuinely understands a client’s business and can see around corners with them. The Business Banking Practitioner qualification exists to build exactly that kind of banker, and it carries 25 years of a provider that knows South African banking from the inside out.

Cornerstone Performance Solutions (CPS) has been delivering accredited education in banking, insurance, and leadership for 25 years. The Business Banking Practitioner is delivered through the CPSLearn platform.
