RETHINK. REROUTE. TRANSFORM.

WITH CPS’S ADAPTIVE LEARNING APPROACH.

Empower your workforce for success with CPS’s adaptive learning approach. Transform skills, ignite excitement.

Through its unique approach to teaching and facilitation, CPS  provides innovative learning experiences that help transform a traditionally unequal learning and development environment, inspiring and empowering CPS students to shape their own tomorrows.

It’s a common misconception among continuing professional development (CPD) educators, especially in South Africa, that simple programme delivery or knowledge sharing is enough to empower learners to think critically and initiate sustainable change in the workplace.

But this couldn’t be further from the truth, according to organisational learning expert and Cornerstone Performance Solutions (CPS) CEO Dr Derek Shirley.

“In a world where constant evolution demands innovative thinking and adaptability, traditional facilitation methods often fail to catalyse the shifts in perspective and behaviour that are needed to transform the workplace,” says Shirley, whose company thrives on delivering innovative learning solutions that help businesses keep up with a dynamic business landscape.

It’s with this in mind that CPS developed Disruptive Process Facilitation (DPF) under the guidance of Learning Practice and Methodology lead Dr Cliff Brunette. DPF is a scientifically grounded pedagogical method  that engages and challenges participants to:

  • Think
  • Know
  • Decide, and
  • Act differently.

Empowering Students to Challenge the Norm

In alignment with CPS’s Business Impact Learning (BIL®) methodology (which was designed to help organisations build the critical skills needed for the future of work in South Africa) DPF is a facilitation approach that shapes the way CPS facilitators guide professional learners.

It’s a methodology that empowers facilitators to provide paradigmatic insight and instil effective, goal-directed behaviour in their learners. And it’s incorporated into each one of CPS’s learning programmes, which range from banking programmes, vocational qualifications in banking and financial advisory services, and an array of capability programmes that promote agile leadership, effective customer service, and sharpened business acumen and adaptiveness.

“DPF is a more effective approach to learning and teaching than straightforward knowledge sharing. It motivates learners to adapt, transform and transition in their chosen field,” explains Shirley.

Brunette adds that the facilitation method goes beyond simply guiding a group. It encourages individuals to challenge established norms and embrace new possibilities.

“DPF empowers facilitators to guide their students in discovering new thinking and deeper learning. That, in turn, empowers students to find new answers and generate emergent properties within a familiar or not-so-familiar problem space,” he says.

Beyond knowledge sharing, CPS believes that the key to success in an ever-changing business landscape is cultivating competencies and abilities that enable a workforce to navigate uncertainty and capitalise on emerging opportunities. Over time, this is the secret ingredient to helping businesses remain competitive in the long run.

“As a methodology that works with BIL®, DPF plays an indispensable role in delivering a distinct and value-driven learning experience to its students. It adds dimension and weight to the students’ facilitation experience, moving beyond the simple consumption of static educational content and basic competency,” says Brunette.

Creating Space for Transformation

CPS was founded more than 20 years ago on the belief that inequality in South Africa persists due to a lack of opportunity, but not talent. It’s with this in mind that Shirley sees DPF as a strategy that helps CPS fulfil its purpose – to foster a more equitable society by empowering students and clients through innovative, blended learning solutions.

Through DPF, CPS provides innovative learning experiences that help transform a traditionally unequal learning and development environment. It also inspires and empowers CPS students to shape their own tomorrows.

“CPS has changed my view of how I do things at work. It’s broadened my mind and has been one of the greatest learning journeys that I’ve experienced, despite the initial challenges I encountered – like not having access to a laptop or tablet, and studying and working at the same time,” says one student, who worked as a cash centre agent at one of South Africa’s major banks.

“Big ups to all the facilitators who encouraged me when I started the programme and didn’t know what to expect, Thanks to them I made it and I’m proud of myself. And although this journey has now come to an end, I will continue to improve and upskill myself, because CPS has set the platform for me,” she adds.

This type of feedback is testament to CPS’s dedicated faculty, as well as the company’s belief in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, where everyone has the tools and resources to reach their full potential.

Akin to Alchemy: The Values of DPF

According to Shirley, CPS embraces a mindset fully entrenched in the DPF method, which values:

  • The role of education to break down barriers and provide opportunities for all
  • The power of reflective and powerful thinking to drive positive change
  • The impact of continuous learning to encourage innovation
  • The merit of collaborative learning, seen as mutually beneficial for learner and facilitator

CPS believes that the right mindset not only sets the tone for an individual’s flourishing career, but can also work to drive change within a group or organisation. As a facilitation approach, DPF works to stimulate innovative thinking and challenge outdated perspectives by disrupting traditional patterns, norms, and assumptions.

“It’s a powerful approach that encourages participants to think differently, explore new possibilities, and take bold actions to address complex challenges. It’s akin to alchemy, with the potential to transmute raw, unstructured ideas and beliefs into gold. DPF has the ability to elicit innovations and evolutions that can redefine horizons,” says Shirley.

Ultimately, DPF works to unlock adaptive potential that can be harnessed within a learning system and amalgamated into collective organisational intelligence. This not only serves to enact transformational change, but also enables a higher organisational adaptive quotient within an organisation, adding value to the growth trajectory of your employees – and to your bottom line.
