Cornerstone was founded in 1999, born of a dream of a small band of doers, on a path with heart. We dreamed of being part of the story of a more equal South Africa, a more prosperous and just Africa, and a kinder world. We did more than dream. We founded Cornerstone Performance Solutions because we believed and continue to believe that inequality and poverty reflect a poverty of opportunity, not of talent. Cornerstone has been home to many people and ideas, but fundamentally it has always been home to an ideal of a learning that emancipates people from the disadvantages of the limited learning opportunities available in sparser environments. Our first logo featured a butterfly on a quarried stone. It captured what we wanted to be: light, colourful, and agile, but with unshakeable foundations as far as knowledge, practice, ethics and humanity are concerned.
Our point of departure is that thinking is a skill, and that it can be modified through mediation. We’ve been inspired by the genius of educationists like Reuven Feuerstein who’ve shown that massive potential can be unlocked to transform circumstance, with the right intent and the right techniques. We do what we do not for people born to high station, elite schooling and global universities. Our people are those who struggle against the odds, striving for the great equaliser and the great differentiator – learning that can change tomorrow.
We have earned credentials because we are serious about learning.
